 Lake Fork Fishing Report

Lake Fork Guide Jeff Gunn

World famous LAKE FORK began construction in 1972. It was stocked with Florida strain largemouth bass in 1978 and opened in 1980. Modern fishery management efforts and excellent fish habitat have contributed to making LAKE FORK known as "the big bass capitol of Texas". Of the top 50 bass in Texas, 36 have come from LAKE FORK, one of the most premier trophy bass lakes in the U.S.

Jeff Gunn specializes in warm, friendly service. He provides the best educational and instructional FUN fishing. Whether you are a weekend angler or a seasoned fishing enthusiast, let his experience help make your trip to LAKE FORK a pleasant one to remember!

Lake Fork Fishing Report

This week on Lake Fork the water level is at full pool and the temp in the main lake is 60 degrees. As I write this there is a major front expected tonight with severe weather on the way. We have been inundated with rain for the last two weeks and the lake is muddy in the upper reaches and stained in the main lake. It is difficult at best to see the beds but there are fish setting up shop all over the lake. The fishing should improve in the next couple of weeks if the gates on the dam stay shut. If they don't then we will struggle to catch fish. Our Bass don't like dropping water and the current pulls the muddy water from the creeks out in to the main lake.
With this said the muddy water is the first to warm as the color draws heat better than clear. Also the creeks are shallower than the main lake and this adds to the warming. We have been catching fish better in the mud than the clear. Spinner baits in chartreuse have been the best for us this week but the weightless baits are still working. Watermelon with a chartreuse dipped tail seems the best. The same for lizards Texas style and tubes. Slow your presentation down and you will get bit. Creek channels and bends have been holding bigger fish as the females are staging. Lizards and jigs have been the ticket in watermelon and black and blue.
The fish seem to be holding off to spawn waiting for the full moon on the 20th. This is not that unusual. This week another fish was entered into the Budweiser Share a Lunker Program. It was caught from the dock! Just shows you that they can be caught anywhere. Hope this helps on your next trip to Lake Fork.
Be careful as Fork looks like there are no stumps left but there just under the surface waiting for a lower unit to come by! It's best to hire a guide on your first trip to learn the boat lanes and the recent patterns.

If you are interested in booking a trip on Lake Fork, get it done soon as guides and motels are almost booked up and you don't want to get left out.
